Cynthia began her modeling career as a model in New York. The model was immediately signed to a five year contract to Wihelmina Models, which led her to the very lucrative first book as the cover model of Essence Magazine. Cynthia's cover for Essence was not just one of their top-performing covers, but it was Susan Taylor's favourite. Cynthia was able to secure her second cover soon after and set up the foundation for her long-term career. She then moved to Paris and Milan in which she appeared walking the runways at Paris Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week. Cynthia, who had lived overseas for nearly one year, re-emerged in New York City where she was extremely sought after. Advertising campaigns with Maybelline Oil of Olay Macy's as well as Macy's were among her first assignments. Elle's Essence's, Vanity Fair magazine editorials soon were followed. Cynthia was a major career success in the year she was chosen ahead of Naomi Campbell as Sandra Bernhadt's co-star in "Without You I Am Nothing".
